Expert Advice
Here are some great tips and advice to help get the most out of your projects.
- Always read label warnings and instructions before starting any wood finishing project. Every Deft product has it's own unique features and method of application.
- Keep doors and windows open to well-ventilate your work area. Proper ventilation prevents build-up of chemical fumes that can be harmful.
- Wear rubber gloves while working with any stain or finishing product.
- Rags, steel wool and other material soaked with oil finishes can spontaneously combust and catch fire if improperly discarded. When finished, immediately place rags, steel wool, etc. in a water-filled metal container.
- When disposing of leftover product, check with your local government for proper disposal of solvent based products. Many communities have hazardous waste collection events.
- Always sand in the direction of the wood grain. If cross grain sanding occurs scratches will become visible after the first coat of stain or finish.
- For more uniform sanding results, use a sanding block. This method will create a more even surface.
- If a wood filler is utilized be sure the filler has dried completely before sanding. Sand area well to avoid uneven stain appearance.
- Remove all sanding dust before staining or finishing.
- Try stain in an inconspicuous area on your project or on a test piece to ensure proper color choice.

- Because stain pigments settle at the bottom of the can, mix thoroughly for consistent color and re-mix at regular intervals.
- Evaluate your project to determine the start and ending areas to stain.
- Don't stain yourself into a corner.
- Gently stir clear finishes, do not shake this will cause air bubbles.
- Apply topcoat to one area at a time using long even strokes with the woods grain.
- For best results apply multiple thin coats of product rather than one heavy coat.
- Sand between coats using fine sandpaper (220 grit) for better adhesion and professional results. Due to the nature of Deft's Clear Wood Finish Brushing Lacquer, sanding in-between coats is not necessary.
- Drying varies depending on weather conditions. High humidity and cold temperatures will extend dry time
